Homemade Sourdough Croutons

Published: May 3, 2025 by Kealy · This post may contain affiliate links ·

My favorite way to repurpose leftover sourdough is by turning it into croutons. They have lots of flavor, a crisp texture and cook on the stovetop in 5 minutes- a perfect way to minimize waste!

You can make croutons from any leftover bread you have. I make sourdough, so thats what I usually have on hand. Fresh croutons are way better than anything you can get from the store and I love that I can control the ingredients.

Instructions

Step One: Cut bread into 1 inch(ish) cubes and place in a pan with butter and olive oil. Its okay if the croutons aren’t perfectly square. You could even rip the bread into pieces if you wanted to.

Step Two: Turn the stovetop to medium high heat, allowing the butter to melt. Add garlic powder, Italian blend and salt. Stir to coat the croutons.

Step Three: Toast over medium high heat for approximately 3 minutes or until your croutons start to brown. Shake the pan or stir to let different sides of the croutons be in contact with direct heat. Note: The color of the croutons is more important than the cook time. If you want really toasty croutons cook for longer, if you want softer croutons, pull them off the heat when they just start to get golden.

Step Four: Top your salad or soup. I favorite salad pairing is a caesar salad!

In this section I will give you ways to freeze, re-purpose and/or use some of your ingredients for another meal. Save yourself some time and effort next time you’re in the kitchen!

Prep leftover bread: If you’re slicing bread for a meal and you some some left, go ahead and cut the leftover into crouton size while you have the knife out. Keep in in a container until you are ready to make croutons.

Storage

Croutons are best used fresh. Any leftovers with be hard and chewy the next day.

Top Tip

The color of the croutons is more important than the cook time. Make sure you are watching your croutons. Toasting happens quick! If you want really toasty croutons cook for longer, if you want softer croutons, pull them off the heat when they just start to get golden.
