Want something that feels like dessert, but skips the sugar? Only 5 ingredients that can be prepped ahead of time and thrown in the oven in a flash makes this baked fruit treat a staple in my house. This is one of the most versatile and easiest things I make. It’s also gluten free, sugar free and can easily be made dairy free!

I love to eat it as a topping on pancakes. It’s naturally sweet enough to replace the syrup. It’s also fantastic topped with Homemade Maple Whipped Cream, as the base of a crumble, or just by itself. I also keep any liquid that remains and put it in my coffee with a splash of cream for some fall flavors. Talk about multiple uses that minimize waste.

Ingredients

- salted butter
- coconut oil
- cinnamon
- apples
- pears (red or green)
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions

Step One: Chop apples and pears into ½ inch cubes. Place into an 8×8 glass baking dish.

Step Two: Add cut butter, coconut oil and cinnamon to the baking dish. No need to stir.

Step Three: Bake for 10 minutes. The coconut oil and butter should be melted now. Stir to fully coat the fruit. Return to the oven and bake, covered, for an additional 20 minutes. You could melt the coconut oil and butter beforehand, but I like doing it this way to streamline the process and minimize dishes.

Step Four: Remove from the oven and stir. Let cool for 5 minutes. Serve by itself, over ice cream, topped with Homemade Maple Whipped Cream, on top of Oat Pancakes, or use this base recipe for a Crumble.
Hint: If you only have unsalted butter add a pinch of salt to the fruit mixture before baking.
Give yourself the gift of prep
In this section I will give you ways to freeze, re-purpose and/or use some of your ingredients for another meal. Save yourself some time and effort next time you’re in the kitchen!
Freeze uncooked: Chop and measure enough ingredients for a double batch of this recipe. Place half of the ingredients in a baking dish and the other half in a freezer bag. Next time you need a fast dessert the chopping is already done. Just dump and place it in the oven.
Use in multiple ways: Baked fruit is delicious by itself and in these ways too:
- On top of ice cream
- Topped with whipped cream
- On top of pancakes as a syrup replacement
- On a baked sweet potato with a drizzle of nut butter and chopped walnuts
- As the base of a crumble
- As a side for pork tenderloin
Fall flavored coffee: Keep any liquid from the bottom of the baking dish and add it to your morning coffee with a splash of cream. It is naturally sweet from the fruit and brings in some delicious fall flavors. Note: This only works for hot coffee. The coconut oil and butter will become hard and unpleasant in iced coffee.
Substitutions
- Dairy free- replace the butter with more coconut oil
- Apple only- No pears? No problem. Just chop up 2 additional apples.
Even if your reader doesn’t follow a specific diet (eg. gluten free), they may have friends or family that they’re cooking for that could use this. This is also a great idea to link out to another blogger with a similar recipe that fits a different diet.
Storage
Store the baked fruit in the fridge. Good for 2-3 days.
Top Tip
Don’t worry about melting the butter and coconut oil before baking. Let the oven do the work for you and minimize prep time/dishes. Stir everything 10 minutes into baking the coat the fruit.
